The United States Canada Institute is a non-partisan think tank based in Washington, D.C., dedicated to strengthening strategic alignment between the United States and Canada at a time of significant geopolitical, economic, and security change.
The Institute serves as a trusted bridge between U.S. and Canadian leadership, advancing high-level policy dialogue and practical cooperation across defense, national security, trade, energy, technology, and the Arctic. Its mission is to support informed decision-making and durable bilateral outcomes that enhance North American security, resilience, and global competitiveness.
The Institute was launched with founding support from the Samuel Group of Companies, with offices in Washington, D.C. and Ottawa.
The Institute focuses on issues where U.S.–Canada coordination is most critical to shared security and prosperity:
- Defense and national security policy
- Trade, industrial policy and supply-chain resilience
- Energy security, critical minerals, and infrastructure
- Technology, Innovation and trusted eco-systems
- Arctic and Northern security, governance and development
Our work is solutions-oriented, bilateral by design, and focused on execution as well as policy.
The Institute convenes senior leaders and practitioners through:
- High-level roundtables and closed-door dialogues
- Executive, ministerial and congressional briefings
- Research papers, policy notes and strategic assessments
- Track-1.5 and Track-2 dialogues
- Senior Fellowships and support for emerging leaders through internship programs
All activities are designed to generate practical, actionable outcomes that advance U.S.–Canada cooperation.
The United States Canada Institute operates as an independent, non-partisan organization committed to the highest standards of governance, transparency, and integrity.
The institute is guided by:
- A Board of Directors
- A bilateral Advisory Council
- Senior Fellows and Strategic Advisors
- Emerging Leaders and Interns
The Institute’s ethos is defined by credibility, discretion and policy impact.
At a moment of profound geopolitical and economic change, the United States and Canada face both shared challenges and extraordinary opportunities. Our two countries are bound not only by geography, but by deeply integrated security, economic, and industrial interests that demand closer strategic alignment.
The United States Canada Institute was established to provide a trusted, non-partisan forum where leaders from both sides of the border can engage in serious, solutions-oriented dialogue. By convening government officials, industry leaders, and policy experts, the Institute advances cooperation across defense, trade, energy, technology, and the Arctic—areas essential to North American security, resilience, and global competitiveness.
The Institute’s location in the Ronald Reagan Building carries particular significance. It reflects a defining period in U.S.–Canada relations shaped by the leadership and partnership of President Ronald Reagan and Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, a time characterized by renewed strategic trust, economic integration, and close personal diplomacy between our two countries.
Situated on Pennsylvania Avenue—between Capitol Hill and the Embassy of Canada, and several minutes away from the White House—the Institute occupies a unique physical and symbolic position at the center of American governance and U.S.–Canada diplomacy. This location underscores the Institute’s mission to serve as a living bridge between policy, leadership and action.
I look forward to working with partners, donors and stakeholders committed to advancing a stronger, more integrated U.S.–Canada relationship.
